Congratulations to these Junior Learning Community heroes who received a Hero Award at Celebration Assembly today.  Great work!

Using Explain Everything in Reading

In Te Māuru-e-taki-nei we have just begun to use Explain Everything in our Literacy and Numeracy programme. Last week one of Mrs Cutler's groups were asked to choose their favourite part of a text and explain why it was their favourite, and also to discuss any difficult words in the text that they encountered as they were reading.  Here is Mitchell's response to the text:

What's the big idea?

To celebrate Book Week 2017, we had the pleasure of enjoying "What's the big idea?"

Harmonica makes a boy connect to a long Lost uncle. The big idea was memories.

The lion in the meadow is a kiwi classic. It teaches us that sometimes the things that frighten us most, turn out to be quite friendly! 

Fuzzy doodle shows us our imagination can do amazing things. An idea popped out, springing up... it can appear as anything any time. Sometimes when we want one it's hard to grab, but if you wait they start to come... the big idea was creativity.

The road to rattenburg. -Spinnaker overcame lots of obstacles and was very brave. The big idea is courage.

A kahuitipua wanted to overtake a park to have it for himself! It wasn't as big and ferocious as he should have been! The rumours made it grow and grow...

A librarian (or agent of understanding) helped solve the mystery. Stories can get changed when people don't know all the details... they add bits to fill in the gaps! 

Some of our akonga helped show how a simple sentence can completely change.

We saw, first hand, how stories can get muddled up and get out of hand! When we leave things and pretend they don't exist, things just get worse! The Kahuitipua represented imaginations. Fear made him grow bigger.

Winter Coughs & Colds

We are learning about how to sneeze and cough correctly in the Winter so that everybody does not get our germs.  We made these self portraits of us using a tissue to catch a sneeze or a cough.

Te Māuru-e-taki-nei were lucky enough to get the left over sherbet from our other Junior classes.  We had a tasting session before we decided to write about the experience.  We talked about how we would describe sherbet to someone who had never tried it before.
Here are a few pieces of writing...

Sherbet tastes like popping candy dancing on your tongue as you eat it.  It also tastes like sour strawberries that make you make a funny face whenever you eat it.  Sherbet looks like crushed pink marshmallows.  Sherbet feels like crushed pink marshmallows.  Sherbet feels like soft baking flour.  Sherbet sounds like popping in your mouth.  Sherbet smells like strawberry milk shake.  When I saw the sherbet I was so excited to taste it and when I tasted it it was delicious.

Hi Louie
You don't know me but I am talking about sherbet.  It tastes like sour lollies and sherbet looks like crushed snow.  Louie the sherbet it also tastes awesome.  Louie the sherbet sounds like wrapping paper inside my mouth.  My taste buds almost exploded.  Sherbet smelt sweet.  Louie I felt happy to taste sherbet.

Yesterday we tried sherbet.  It was incredible.  It was pink.  It looked like candyfloss.  It was sweet.  When I saw it I loved it.  I wished Louie tried it.  He would of said "Oh yeah!"  Phoebe liked it.  It made my face turn red.  It was sugary.  I mean sour.  I saw red bits.  I think it was it sweet.  I wonder if there is a lot of sugar.  It looks like mished marshmallow.  I was tempted to eat it.  I just liked it.  There was a lot of mess where I ate it.  I liked it.  It tastes like popping candy.  I was excited when Mrs Dickson said I have a surprise.  Then she told us.
