Hi everyone!

Hi everybody, I thought I would just pop online to tell. you what I've been doing so far this morning.

I've rung my Dad and had a catch up over the phone with him. Then I had a catch up with my daughter, who doesn't live at home anymore. It was nice to chat to my family.

I have also been playing with my dog, Jimmy. In these photos he is playing with his favourite ball. He is quite excited that I am not at school and loves that I am at home with him.

What can you do during school closure

General

Being at home in self isolation may be a stressful time for all families so we don’t want becoming the “teacher” to add to your stress.  Below are some simple ideas of what you can do to help your child continue learning while at home.

The most important thing is to keep it fun.

Here are some ideas of some things you can do.

Basic Stuff

All our children are 5 years old and it is still the basic stuff that is most important.

Oral language - talk with your children. Ask them questions about how they are feeling and what they think about stuff.  Use the what, where, when, why and how questions to help them to extend their thinking and speech.


Spend time colouring in with your child, check that they are using the correct pencil grip.


Cutting out -  Spend lots of time cutting pictures out of magazines and creating collages which you can talk and write about if you want to.  Create stories and books.


Playing games - teach simple card games like memory and snap. Play games like snakes and ladders with two dice so they have to add the numbers together.


Bake with your child and enjoy eating it!


Read to your child.  Or look at online websites  like https://www.storylineonline.net/ or http://www.scholastic.com/100BestReadAloudBooks/#logo that will read books to you for example storyline online where actors read the story.  Listen with your child and when the story is finished discuss:
- What was the best bit? - Why
- Who were the characters?
- What happened first, next and last?



Keep practicing the alphabet, the name of the letter, the sound it makes and a word that starts with that sound.

Practising with Letter Tiles

These videos show some of the ways you can use your child's letter tiles to support them learning how to segment out the sounds in words and then to blend them in order to read the word.

First day of 2020 in Te Ope Ruaraki

Sebastian liked playing in the pool with his friend Micheal.

Kayden loved playing with the new kitchen. He pretended to have a cook out.

Aleigha also liked playing in the pool.

Duke said he liked playing on the scooter track.

Mila, Sebastian and Makenzie enjoyed painting their hands for our poem of the week

 

Author and Illustrator Visitors to our space

Today we were very lucky to have Karyn and Jessica visit our space.  Karyn is a former student of South Hornby School and she is now a published author.  Jessica creates the illustrations for Karyn's stories.
The students had two stories read to them and then there was time for questions.  The students were enthralled by the stories, relating to New Zealand birds.

EAST Club Trip

A fantastic South Hornby trip to Leeston Showgrounds followed by a visit to  Southbridge School.

Very exciting for city kids to get a feel for the country life.  

We all had a wonderful day!
