Lockdown ideas to keep you busy at home!

Basics

- Learn to follow a recipe (scones, muffins, pancakes)
- Learn how to look after the house (cleaning, jobs - recycling, setting the table)
- Build fine motor skills  (drawing, cutting paper, crafts, art, chalk drawing)
- Keep a journal of daily activities, thoughts and wins.
- Stem challenges (building a tower, boat, building, bridge with items from around the house)
- Learn to tie your shoe laces

Oral Language

- Talk with your children. Ask them questions about how they are feeling and what they think about stuff.  Use the what, where, when, why and how questions to help them to extend their thinking and speech.

- Spend time colouring in with your child, check that they are using the correct pencil grip.

Cutting out

- Spend lots of time cutting pictures out of magazines and creating collages which you can talk and write about if you want to.

- Create stories and books.

Playing Games

- Teach simple card games like memory and snap.

- Play games like snakes and ladders with two dice so they have to add the numbers together.

Reading

Read to your child.  Or look at online websites  like https://www.storylineonline.net/ or http://www.scholastic.com/100BestReadAloudBooks/#logo that will read books to you for example storyline online where actors read the story.  Listen with your child and when the story is finished discuss:
- What was the best bit? - Why
- Who were the characters?
- What happened first, next and last?

Keep practicing the alphabet, the name of the letter, the sound it makes and a word that starts with that sound.

Read to your child, have your child read to you. Let your child read to a teddy or favourite toy.

Maths

We have recently been learning about shapes. Explore the shapes you have around your house and garden. Take photos of these shapes and discuss how many corners and sides it has.

Week 4 - Level 4 Lockdown!

Hope you have all received an email from the team in Te Ope Ruaraki.

Here is a TVNZ home learning link to recordings from last year, if you are looking for some interesting and fun ways to keep your child engaged.

Buddy time with Ms Norris and Ms Goslin - Te Ope Ruaraki and Whakarua

Whakarua shared their information reports on the ipads with Te Ope Ruaraki students.  We shared jigsaw puzzles.  Our Duffy books arrived today and we were lucky to be given the books we chose.

Alphabet Fun

We watched a short clip from Alpha Blocks today where the letters were trying to get themselves into the correct order.
We decided we could do the same thing. This took lots of concentration, patience and turn taking.

Fantastic Friday!

We had a wonderful assembly with lots of people being awarded their first and second wristbands.  That is fantastic - well done to all the recipients.  We will keep working on achieving more 'thank you' tickets.

We are learning about the Zones of Regulation, and our feeling today was around the green zone.  We know how we feel in the green zone - ready to learn, good,  happy, thumbs up, life is good in the green zone.

A visit from the Library Van

We were very lucky to have a visit from Anne and her Library Van today.

She read us a really fun story, then we headed out to the van to choose some library books to take home. We also got to enjoy sitting outside and browsing through some cool books.

We can read these books with our whānau over the holidays.

Oh My Gosh! Thanks Duffy Books!!

We got some Duffy Books,  and they say our name in the front cover. They can help us read.

They came in a box. It was exciting because it came wrapped up in wrapping paper.

We have to look after them and read them gently, otherwise they might break.

Turn the pages nicely. We can keep these books at home, they belong to us now.

Our buddy class from Whakarua came to visit us and share they shared their Duffy books with us. It was fun listening to them read to us.
