Hugo's maths tasks

Thank you Hugo for working on maths activities today.  Here is a photo of Hugo sorting his toys into size.  I wonder if other children in Te Ope Ruaraki did something similar.

Hugo counted 7 tomatoes in the picture.

He correctly counted the apple cucumbers to be 11 and need 4 more to make them 15.

Hugo counted 19 figs using skipping by 5 method.

Narisa (Hugo’s mum) suggested making fig jam/ marmalade and store them for the winters.

Thank you Narisa for the recipe idea I will let you know how I get on.

Smiles from Michael

Check out this smile on Michael. So good to see your smiling face. Michael has been having lots of fun at home with his family and he has spent some time chatting to his extended family through video calls. His Grandad has been teaching him how to do Science experiments. They sound so fun. Great to hear from you Michael. We all miss you too.

Paige's words

Hi,Here is a photo of Paige’s word challenge for today, lovely day to be doing this outside on the driveway.

Hugo's words

Hugo wrote these words in his notebook.

Learning Post 4

Good morning everybody

I hope you are all finding fun things to do at home with your family.  Yesterday I started sorting out my garden for winter.

Today's learning challenge is all about maths.  We have been learning about measurement and I would like you to copy what we did with the gingerbread men.  Either out in your backyard or around the house find 6 items, organise them into height order, take a photo and email it to me (gatehouses@southhornby.school.nz) so I can post it here.  Here is a picture of what I did yesterday when I was working in the garden.

While I was gardening I picked some fruit and vegetables can you help me count them?  You can post your answers as a comment below.

How many tomatoes are there?  How many more would I need to make 10?

These are apple cucumbers. How many did I pick?  How many more would I need to have 15?  How many more to have 20?

These are figs.  How many did I pick?  How many more would I need to have 20?  Can you count them by skip counting in 2s or 5s?

Does anyone have any ideas of what to do with figs?  I would really appreciate some recipes or ideas about what to do with figs, I have heaps more ripening on the tree.

Today is the last day of the school term, so from next week you will be on holiday for two weeks.  Your teachers will be back on this blog from Wednesday 15th April.  Have a great staycation. I will be doing lots of catching up around the house and garden.

Stay safe, stay home.

Learning Post #3

Ki ora everybody

Ke te pehea koe? How are you feeling? I hope you are enjoying time with your families, and you are being kind to your parents as well as any brothers and sisters.

Today might be a great day for you to help put the dishes away. Ask an adult to show you where to put things.

Today's challenge is to write as many letters or words as you can. If you have chalk, you can even do it on the concrete, or use a paint brush and some water like we do at school.

Try writing -  'I', 'the', 'like', 'red', 'green', 'blue', 'your name', and any other words you know.

Take a photo and email it to me. I can put any photos up here on the blog to show your friends.

Alphabet sound song.

Here is our sound song for you to enjoy.

Learning Blog #1

Hi Te Ope Ruaraki whanau,

I am at school today with Mrs M, just tidying things up and getting samples of your fantastic work for sharing with parents at a later date. That's our school holiday job! So proud of how much learning you have all done in the eight weeks of term 1.

It will feel very different for you over the next few days and weeks. We will miss your little smiling faces but all the staff can be reached via the blog or email. We will be checking the blog daily until Friday. Then it is officially the school holidays for two weeks, during that time we will be off line. After Easter we will be back on line again, checking in to hear how you are getting on.

On the blog we will give you some ideas you may want to do.

Today try a treasure hunt around the house and garden looking for things that start with the letter S. Take a photo, and if you can of the collection you have made, and add the photo as a comment.

Enjoy your time with your family.

Ms Norris

The Alphabet song

Hey beautiful chickens,

Here is a copy of our alphabet song because I know you would love to share these with your families at home. Your singing is so amazing and should be shared with everyone.

Hi everyone!

Hi everybody, I thought I would just pop online to tell. you what I've been doing so far this morning.

I've rung my Dad and had a catch up over the phone with him. Then I had a catch up with my daughter, who doesn't live at home anymore. It was nice to chat to my family.

I have also been playing with my dog, Jimmy. In these photos he is playing with his favourite ball. He is quite excited that I am not at school and loves that I am at home with him.

What have you done today?

What can you do during school closure

General

Being at home in self isolation may be a stressful time for all families so we don’t want becoming the “teacher” to add to your stress.  Below are some simple ideas of what you can do to help your child continue learning while at home.

The most important thing is to keep it fun.

Here are some ideas of some things you can do.

Basic Stuff

All our children are 5 years old and it is still the basic stuff that is most important.

Oral language - talk with your children. Ask them questions about how they are feeling and what they think about stuff.  Use the what, where, when, why and how questions to help them to extend their thinking and speech.

Spend time colouring in with your child, check that they are using the correct pencil grip.

Cutting out -  Spend lots of time cutting pictures out of magazines and creating collages which you can talk and write about if you want to.  Create stories and books.

Playing games - teach simple card games like memory and snap. Play games like snakes and ladders with two dice so they have to add the numbers together.

Bake with your child and enjoy eating it!

Read to your child.  Or look at online websites  like https://www.storylineonline.net/ or http://www.scholastic.com/100BestReadAloudBooks/#logo that will read books to you for example storyline online where actors read the story.  Listen with your child and when the story is finished discuss:
- What was the best bit? - Why
- Who were the characters?
- What happened first, next and last?

Keep practicing the alphabet, the name of the letter, the sound it makes and a word that starts with that sound.
Studdyladder is a great website for Maths and English, if you would like. https://www.studyladder.co.nz/

We will continue to upload this blog with ideas. Please don’t make this stressful for yourself or your children. Just do what you can.

If you take photos of your wee people and would like to share them with us, we would love to see what you get up to. :)

Practising with Letter Tiles

These videos show some of the ways you can use your child's letter tiles to support them learning how to segment out the sounds in words and then to blend them in order to read the word.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask one of the teachers.
